We walked to a table towards the back of the small building and picked out what we wanted I was surprised to find how reasonably priced everything was. Chrissy led me to the back of the line where pink slips of paper were resting on top of a glass counter top and handed me one. It seemed very fast paced even from the outside and being that I had no idea how the process worked I knew I was destined to annoy at least one staff member. As we approached the tiny shop, I began to get a bit nervous. The rain had softened into a light drizzle and the sun began to peak out from beneath the gray blankets of clouds today was turning out to be a nice day for dim sum. It wasn’t long before the car was stopped and we were sliding out of the back seat onto the sidewalk, safe and sound.

Much to my surprise, the ride there was quiet aside from the smooth jazz playing from the car’s speakers and the harsh pattering of rain hitting the windows of the car as it meandered through the city streets.
However, being that I was accompanied by a friend, I decided to take the chance. It didn’t help that I had recently read an article about a woman actually being kidnapped while using the “pseudo taxi” system. Basing the Uber system on just my assumption, it always appeared that people were just lining up to be kidnapped. I had never taken an Uber before and my extended knowledge was that you essentially got into a car with a stranger who is supposed to take you to your destination.
Hearing about the traditional dim sum experience already makes me claustrophobic which means I most certainly have to try it next time.Īn Uber car pulled up next to me and I slowly stepped down from the curb and opened the door. I, unfortunately, have yet to partake in this “true experience.” I’ve actually only had dim sum once before and both times to date, menus have been involved. Customers are encouraged to try multiple articles of food by requesting anything that looks interesting on the carts that pass by the tables and to wash down the assortments with tea. The typical dim sum experience happens in a bustling restaurant, loud and lively with the chatter of hungry customers and the scurrying of busy servers. My personal favorite so far has been the turnip cake, which, to this day, is still very surprising to me. With its origins based in Cantonese customs, dim sum is commonly grouped with “yum cha,” or rather tea drinking and translates into “to touch your heart.” It consists primarily of sweet and savory steamed or fried food articles. So, what is dim sum? On the surface, it’s essentially an assortment of finger foods that are filling enough to make up an entire meal. Since the shop website didn’t give much back story for their particular dim sum history, I figured I’d give a quick crash course on the art of dim sum. However, being that I’ve promised myself to experience life a little more, I decided to take the chance. Located in the Richmond District of the city, Good Luck Dim Sum is said to create quite a bit of hubbub.
Have you ever thought to yourself, “Dim Sum is worth leaving the safety of my home.” In a world where delivery exists, such a statement is simply laughable.
